Santi Cañizares, who played for Real Madrid in two separate spells (1988–1992 and 1994–1998), shared his thoughts on Florentino Pérez’s historic press conference during the El Partidazo program on Cadena COPE. The former goalkeeper expressed deep concern over the current state of the Real Madrid president.
“I don’t recognize Florentino Pérez today. There was a highly successful Florentino who could foresee the future time and again, staying ahead of the curve and managing the club exceptionally well. But if we look at the last three years – the stadium project, the Super League that went nowhere and which he insisted on until the whole world mocked him, the two Vinicius controversies, and even the failed Mbappé signing – these have been three years full of mistakes that do not fit the successful Florentino we knew,” Cañizares said.
The former Madrid goalkeeper admitted feeling “disappointed” by the press conference, stating, “I wanted to hear sporting solutions for next season.” He went on to say, “I haven’t recognized him today… The press conference was bad, erratically bad, downright bad.”
What worries Cañizares most is the future. “The future, as announced by this current Florentino… the one who is 79 years old. I say this with all due respect. I admire older people and I admire him personally and professionally… But if this is how his brain works right now, then the future of Real Madrid is what should truly concern everyone,” he concluded.
