Sporting CP defeated Santa Clara 4-2 in a comeback win, narrowing the gap to four points behind league leaders Porto, but the match was marred by contentious refereeing decisions that fueled ongoing tensions in Portuguese football.

Trincão celebrates his goal against Santa Clara.
The victory, achieved after trailing early, keeps Sporting CP in the hunt for the Primeira Liga title. Coach Rui Borges opted for a rotated starting XI, leaving out Iván Fresneda, Gonçalo Inácio, Maxi Araújo, Morten Hjulmand, and Luis Suárez, while Geovany Quenda, recently back in training, was not even included in the squad.
The changes backfired quickly as Santa Clara took the lead in the third minute. Luis Fernando delivered a cross from the edge of the box, and Gustavo Klismahn’s glancing header beat Rui Silva. Controversy erupted soon after when the referee awarded a questionable free kick against Santa Clara’s Gabriel Silva, who was already advancing into the area, for a foul on Ricardo Mangas that appeared non‑existent. From that set piece, “Pote” Gonçalves equalized in the 22nd minute before Daniel Bragança and Trincão struck to give Sporting a commanding lead at halftime.
The officiating did not improve. Late in the game, VAR disallowed a goal from veteran Gonçalo Paciência for a prior foul on Souleymane Faye that many considered dubious, leading to a red card for a Santa Clara staff member. Paciência eventually scored legitimately, making it 3‑2 and putting Sporting under pressure. However, deep into stoppage time, after a corner‑kick grapple in the box, young Nel netted the decisive fourth goal from a penalty, sparking wild celebrations at Alvalade.
“We couldn’t afford to drop points if we wanted to keep the pressure on Porto,” a Sporting source said after the match. With the same number of games played, Rui Borges’ side now sit four points behind the dragon, who face Famalicão tomorrow. Sporting’s focus now shifts to their Champions League quarter‑final first leg against Arsenal.
This match only intensified the ongoing war of words between the two Portuguese giants, with Sporting using every opportunity to remind Porto that the title race is far from over.
