In a recent interview, winger Harvey Barnes openly acknowledged a mental issue within his team. Barnes, who has a solid scoring record against West Ham, admitted that Newcastle’s mindset problems mirror those of West Ham last season.
Eddie Howe’s side has endured a disappointing campaign, dropping 27 points from winning positions. The Hammers must exploit that vulnerability as they push for the win.
Speaking to reporters, Barnes admitted the Magpies have a major tactical flaw that needs fixing:
“We haven’t handled being ahead well. When we lead, we start looking nervous and lose confidence in scoring another goal, ending up just trying to hold on—but we haven’t done that well enough. That’s been the story of our season: struggling in the latter stages, feeling pressure, and eventually conceding.
“It’s hard to pinpoint exactly why. Maybe some fatigue late in games, and after it happens a couple of times, confidence dips. Dropping back is not the manager’s instruction; it’s just crept into our game. We have to stop doing it.”
This admission is an open invitation for West Ham to take the initiative rather than getting caught in a defensive chess match. Coach Nuno must revert to his more attacking 4-4-2 formation and go straight at Eddie Howe’s side. Barnes has basically confirmed that, like West Ham last season, Newcastle under pressure are unstable this year.
