Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Edgbaston (day one)
Warwickshire 147: Hain 57; White 4-49
Yorkshire 110-4: Wharton 40, Brook 29*; Hannon-Dalby 2-25
Warwickshire 0 pts, Yorkshire 3 pts
Yorkshire’s seamers capitalized on favorable conditions to seize control on the first day of their County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. The visitors bowled out the home side for just 147, led by an impressive collective effort from Jack White (4-49), supported by George Hill (2-27), Ben Cliff, and Logan van Beek (both 2-33).
Sam Hain’s resilient 57 off 97 balls was the only notable contribution for Warwickshire. However, Yorkshire also found batting challenging and slipped to 38-3 before James Wharton (40) and Harry Brook (29 not out) staged a recovery, adding 63 runs—the largest partnership of the day.
Opting to bowl first after seeing some grass on the pitch, Yorkshire struck early, removing Warwickshire’s top three batters within the first nine overs. Adam Lyth caught Alex Davies at second slip off White, wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow took Rob Yates’ edge off Cliff, and Brook collected Dan Mousley’s edge at first slip off White. Beau Webster drove at Hill and played on, while captain Ed Barnard chased a wide delivery from van Beek and was caught behind by Bairstow.
Hain was the only top-six batter to reach double figures, but his resistance ended when White produced a fine delivery that he edged to first slip. Zen Malik dug in for 67 minutes before edging Cliff to third slip, and Michael Booth nicked Hill behind. Jordan Thompson, facing his former teammates, was trapped lbw by van Beek.
The last-wicket pair of Ethan Bamber (28) and Olly Hannon-Dalby added 30 runs—the biggest partnership of the innings—with Bamber twice hitting van Beek into the Hollies Stand before falling lbw to a swinging yorker from White.
Bamber and Hannon-Dalby then turned the tables with the ball. Hannon-Dalby, recalled from his loan spell at Worcestershire due to injuries to Chris Woakes and Keith Barker, produced a superb off-cutter that Lyth edged to the keeper. Bamber trapped Finlay Bean lbw, and Matt Revis fell in similar fashion to Hannon-Dalby.
This brought Brook to the crease for his first Championship innings in a year. Under thick cloud, moderate light, and a pitch offering plenty, conditions could hardly have been more challenging. Yet Brook and Wharton batted positively during their 12-over stand. Wharton was caught by Yates off Thompson, having been dropped earlier by the same player off Hannon-Dalby, but Brook and Bairstow saw out the rest of the day without further damage.
Brook sliced Booth for six over third man and mixed play-and-misses with elegant strokes to remain unbeaten, capping a strong day for Yorkshire as they look to build on last week’s win over Somerset.
